A pair of experienced and well-known climber Elisabeth Revol and Tomek Mackiewicz made a daring winter ascent of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan on 25/01/2018. Unfortunately, on the way down from the summit, Tomek became snowblind and suffered serious frostbites. They signaled for help.  The upfront rescue cost was estimated at USD80,000. The climbing community has come together and helped raised funds necessary to pay for the rescue helicopters that ultimately saved the life of Elisabeth on 28/01. Sadly, Tomek who was in critical condition at 7300m as of  the morning of 26/01 was unable to descend lower. The pair did not have a tent and were light on supplies hoping to descend quickly. Deteriorating weather and high altitude made it possible for the rescuers to reach him. Today we are reorienting the fundraising effort to provide for Anna Antonina, the wife of Tomek and their 3 children.

Funds will be distributed through the non-profit association Himalayan Light run by Elisabeth Revol and sent to Tomek's kids from there

Dear All,
As we are winding down the GOFUNDME account (that will remain open for the donations until May 30th), we would like to provide you with the detailed breakdown of the use of funds. Both Anna and Joanna, mothers of Tomek's three kids, would like to extend profound thanks to all of you for the extraordinary generosity that will allow them to educate Zoja, Max and Tonja in the years to come. Elisabeth Revol and the rest of the rescue team extend further profound thanks not least for the spirit of solidarity that has allowed us to mobilise resources and to save a human life.
Sincerely,
Masha Gordon

A message from Elisabeth Revol:

Nanga Parbat Winter Ascent 2018

This route started by Messner was meant to become a culmination of our physical and mental preparation. Tomek and I knew that the summit would not be easy.

Fifteen days separate us from this tragic story, now widely recounted by the press, narrated yet also distorted with words often taken out of context. My intent here is not to tell you the facts but rather to share my perspective.

I have infinite gratitude for Tomek, for his mystical fascination with this mountain, ‘the Fairy's call’. One that for those uninitiated may be difficult to comprehend and to accept that a winter ascent of this mountain is what has always excited him. Today I would have liked him to be here to tell you all about this journey but tragically things did not turn out this way… My thoughts go to Anna, Tomek’s wife, and his three children. Perhaps, they will consider this quest of a summit frivolous in relation to a loss of their dad ... I do not know how to resolve this dilemma and it is not my place to provide a view…. I just know that the passion of their father was so noble that the one would struggle to come up with the ‘right’ answer.

The collective generosity that manifested itself through crowdfunding warms my heart. Just imagining what it may have meant for all those people who did not known us yet wanted to show their sympathy through a donation.

THANKS again.

I know how much I owe to the four Polish mountaineers who understood what was at stake in this situation by interrupting their own summit attempt of K2 in order to save other mountaineers.

A solidarity that may be all too often in thoughts but may be rarely practiced in actual circumstances.

THANKS to Denis Urubko, Adam Bielecki, Piotr Tomala, Jaroslaw Botor.

Thank you to Masha who masterminded the crowdfunding initiative, the friends who helped us deal with media in the hours that were trying and traumatic, and, of course, to Ludo who was the backbone of the rescue effort.

My profound THANKS go to the Polish government that has not hesitated to provide generous financial support to the rescue operation in the critical hour and to the staff of the French embassy in Pakistan that has provided exemplary consular support in these difficult hours.

THANKS to the Pakistani helicopter pilots who gave their best in challenging weather conditions.

To Pakistan where I met many people with strong values and high moral convictions ... THANK YOU.

THANKS to all those who supported me with their messages, in all forms … I do not want you underestimate how healing and indispensable they were.

THANK YOU to all medical teams - in Pakistan, hospital in Sallanches and in Geneva - who just knew how to find the right words and the kindness to make me forget for the moment my sorrows.

I do not have any other words but a ‘THANK YOU’, still I would like to be able to show you my further gratitude when the media storm is over, to find more right words when I manage to find some peace.

THANK YOU to the press that stood clear of sensationalism and related the facts as they were.

With great respect to Tomek and his children,

Elisabeth Revol

Dear all,

This campaign was started in the morning of January 26th with an urgent intent to raise money required for the rescue of Elisabeth and Tomek. At that moment, Polish and French consular were doing their utmost to place and secure financial guarantee necessary to get the helicopters in the air. Askari Aviation informed them that they require a very large CASH deposit - USD50,000 - to start the rescue. In desperate attempt to get the action going, I have personally provided a letter of financial guarantee to the French government and launched this GOFUNDME campaign to raise funds for the rescue. Later that day Polish and French embassies managed to pull together cash required... The time was lost and the rescue delayed by 24 hours...

In the meantime, your generosity was such that in the first 5 hours we raised EUR50,000.... No doubt, this number on the screen that anyone could have accessed played a significant role in assuring that the families had the money to launch the rescue... It is not a practice of governments to pay for the rescue of their citizens abroad.

When the rescue attempt failed to reach Tomek, we have reoriented raising every incremental EUR for the provision for Tomek's children. Therefore, comments that the fund should not be paying for rescue are not appropriate.

We are impressed with the Polish government's decision not to present any rescue bills to the families for the repayment. It is a display of national pride. We will not comment or judge the French government. It is not up to us. We only attest to the exemplary consular support Eli's family has received. This has been as paramount as provision of cash.

Once again, we are most grateful to all of you and will provide a public account of funds used. Elisabeth's SAR insurance of EUR20,000 will be used to reduce repayment of the advance made by the French consulate.

With great respect to all of you,
Masha Gordon
