Three hardworking, dedicated climate activists are moving from Melbourne/Naarm to NSW and would appreciate your support to make it happen.
We have handed in our notice. On the 1st of June (1 day after a court appearance for civil disobedience in Naarm) we will be on our way to NSW, aiming to find an abode around the Sydney/Central Coast/Newcastle area. From there we will continue and expand on the volunteer work that we have been doing to date – tirelessly endeavouring to grow and nurture a movement willing and able to take the appropriate action to address the climate and ecological emergency we are in.
Why move to NSW? As much as we love life in Melbourne and the community that we are connected with there, the decision to relocate is a strategic one that is not being made lightly. We understand that there has never been a more important time in history to be active in the fight against the destruction of our earth and all life on it, and we see nothing in our lives as more important than walking the surest path to achieving climate action. Hence, we are moving towards Sydney because it has a 30 % larger economy than Melbourne (therefore more to disrupt), is close to the federal capital Canberra, and is the state with the largest population – and an entire coastline that was devastated by the tragedy of black summer. Furthermore, as Violet and Andy already spent 5 months in NSW last year they have already established a fertile network and seen the rewards of the cross pollination of activists around the country.
What will the money be used for?
Paying bond, paying rent as we settle in, basics such as food and bills as we settle in, intermediate accommodation that we may need, transport costs between various court appearances in Victoria and NSW, a slight sense of financial security whilst we look for paid work or set up other means for surviving financially as we continue our work within the climate rebellion movement.
With around 4 pending court appearances for Andrew, 1 for Mark and 4 for Violet it is clear that we are taking this situation very seriously and willing to engage in the sacrificial, disruptive civil disobedience that is being called for in these times. Andrew (32), Violet (30) and Mark (30) all have things we would like to be doing at this beautiful time in our lives. Like starting a family, having a paid job, running away to the bush and living in a community, sailing around the world – literally anything rather than dealing with the oppressive arm of the law on a regular basis – which has included several overnight stints in remand. But we dedicate ourselves selflessly and tirelessly to the movement, organising actions, recruiting new activists, sending newsletters, attending numerous zoom meetings, coordinating working groups etc. etc. And we do this with love, a smile and a song! Bless em’! We are doing this work and willing to keep doing it – but humbly request a bit of help from you at this time.
Whether you want to see us go, keen for us to arrive, or just generally support us for our hard work, achievements, persistence and sacrifice – we are humbled by your contribution.
