Help Melinda fight Cancer!

Help Melinda Fight cancer!

Please help my friend Melinda (Mel) to fund a new cancer treatment recommended by her Oncologist which unfortunately is not yet funded by the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), in the hope of being able to reduce the tumours and allow her more time to enjoy her family growing up.

At a glance, you would never know that there was anything wrong, but beneath the laughter, jokes and cheer there is a life of numerous hospital visits, surgeries, blood transfusions, chemo treatments, radiation and immense pain.

5 years ago, Melinda was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, located in her bowel.

After a bout of radiation, followed by keyhole surgery and oral chemo to mop things up, it was thought that Mel had beaten it. Little did she know, that 6 months later, it would be back with a vengeance.

In 2015 Mel was given a maximum of 18 months to live, but her determination to fight this has led her to seek out new oncology and surgical options. Over the last 5 years, Melinda has undergone several invasive treatments, from straight chemo, to HIPEC (resecting surgery with chemo inserted inside the opening) and other constant treatments. The whole time staying strong, cheerful, and caring of others.

In total, Mel has undergone over 20 surgeries and has spent over 9 months in hospital. These surgeries and treatments though have given her the chance to be present for her husband Marc and to see her kids growing up.  She has been able to share with her children milestones such as a first day of high school and a teenage birthday.

Melinda hasn’t been able to work for the last 4 years, placing greater financial burden on the family.

She has a primary tumour at the base of her spine, which doesn’t allow her to sit for periods of time.

After the last round of chemo, it was deemed that her previous cancer treatment plan was no longer effective and that the main tumour, located in the pelvis is growing.

This means that Melinda now needs to look for a new treatment, one that has good results! Unfortunately, the treatment recommended by her Oncologist is not covered by the PBS and must be paid for personally by Melinda and Marc. This treatment costs over $10,000 per month.

Professional advice is that Mel needs to go on this medication for a minimum of 2 months to gauge effectiveness, but it’s likely a treatment plan will need to be in place for several months.

This treatment has been recommended as an effective treatment for people who have exhausted conventional cancer medication. It will be a combination treatment of immunotherapy (Nivolumab) and chemotherapy (Regorafenib) medications.

Those who know Melinda and Marc know that they have fought this horrible disease with everything that they can, unfortunately now they really need us to help them out with the medical bills….please consider sharing this link with friends and family, or donating a little funds - if this is something that you are able to do, to help keep this beautiful family together!

Thank you,

Megan Oliver
