~Tanya's Story~

In 2013, Tanya started noticing some medical issues. After testing and numerous doctor and neurologist consults nobody seemed willing to come to an actual conclusion. In July 2019, Tanya finally found a doctor who was willing to listen. He looked at the symptoms and ordered a heap of tests, with a suspicion that proved to be right. 15 years ago, Tanya worked at a summer camp in America where she used to go swimming in the lakes and dams – and occasionally would get bitten by ticks.

Tanya has now been diagnosed with Chronic and Neurological Lyme Disease. Essentially, one of the ticks that bit her years ago also injected a bacteria into her bloodstream. That bacteria has made its way through her blood and has been attacking parts of Tanya's body for years, including her brain. As well as causing extreme fatigue, pain and a list of over 40 other significant symptoms, they’ve also caused a number of co-diseases.

Tanya is starting a treatment plan that involves upwards of 400 tablets/medications a week for at least two years - that’s this month’s medication in the photo!

There will be multiple high dose antibiotics, custom compounded medication being flown in from across Australia, vitamin treatments, blood tests and a heap of others. She has been told that these medications will make her sicker than she could ever imagine.

As a result Tanya has had to make the very difficult decision to take some time out from work so she is able to undergo an urgent and extensive medical treatment program.

Ironically, even though so many Australians are presenting with symptoms and testing positive to this disease, Lyme Disease isn’t recognised in Australia. The testing process alone cost over $3500. That doesn’t take into account her treatment, which will be over $2000 each month just for medication as none of them (even regular antibiotics) are covered on the NHS when Lyme related. Since Lyme Disease isn’t recognised in this country, many of Tanya's Insurances won’t pay out and it’s complex for the ones that may.

We are aiming to raise $50,000 to pay for Tanya's treatment for 2 years so she can focus on getting better.

Tanya hopes that someone reading this will recognise some of the Lyme symptoms (full list - https://canlyme.com/lyme-basics/symptoms/  ) and ask questions earlier. If you do - please find a Lyme literate doctor and insist on getting tested. Tanya has gone through nearly 7 years of hell because it was missed. Had she been diagnosed back when she first started having symptoms, Tanya wouldn’t be going through what she is now.
