On 18th January 2021 Albert, Gaffer and all-around good guy was rushed to hospital with a mystery illness.
The initial diagnosis was Meningitis, however further testing has Doctor’s believing he has developed Neuromyelitis Optica.
More commonly referred to as Devic’s Disease, NMO is a rare yet severe autoimmune inflammatory condition damaging the central nervous system, specifically the myelin (protective coating) around the optic nerve and spinal cord.
Something like Devic’s Disease is a long term diagnosis, it will mean a minimum of 9 months out of work, along with an uncertain future of flare-ups highly likely.
While Albert is confined to a bed at The Alfred, he, his family and friends await the most recent results from the United States to confirm the NMO diagnosis. So we are here, asking for your support on their behalf. Albert’s case, so sudden and unexpected, highlights the fragility of our health, our relationships, and our position as Freelancers within the Australian Film Industry.
Whilst there is no intention to politicise Albert’s situation, it would be remiss not to acknowledge that this is a serious reminder of the vulnerability in the lack of protections and financial support available to Freelancers, or short term contractors, in Australia.
Please, if you have worked with Albert, crossed paths with him, if he has touched your life in some way or if you simply want to support a fellow Freelancer in a difficult time, any and all donations would be greatly appreciated. This money will be used to help pay medical bills and take the pressure off Albert and his wife as they walk the long and challenging road to recovery.
