COVD Help started on 25th march as an individual initiative of Phnom Penh resident Claire and a group of friends to support the Tuktuk drivers in the neighborhood who were struggling to pay for their food and water because of their loss of income linked to the covid wave.
Clare published a post on her private Facebook profile to ask friends if they wanted to contribute to the food and hygiene packs. Very quickly a group formed. Now we are around 30 people.
Our Purpose: Our purpose is to find ways to respond to the extreme poverty linked to the sudden loss of jobs of many in PP, and support the community.
How do we work : We are not an NGO or a declared charity, only a group of people who contribute the way they want in the actions aimed to support the communities we live in.
We keep a detailed track of all donations and expenses. Every single dollar is put into the purchase of the kits and distributed by small groups of volunteers, going via private transportation in the neighbourhood to find and meet isolated poor people : cyclo, Tuktuk drivers, trash collectors, street families... Recently with the even harsher lockdown we have partnered with civil society organisation IDEA who are an association for tuk tuk drivers and informal workers.
IDEA has an established network, a community that trust them, and the means to keep on distributing even under lockdown. They are currently in urgent need of food for 1000 families who have lost their jobs. We evaluated each emergency food kit to $8 and we set up the goal to raise $8000USD ($10000AUD) so each family can get a bag of rice and a pack of fish.
What’s next in this lockdown : we want to partner and support more NGOs, so emergency food kits can target other vulnerable beneficiaries. We are thinking of trash collectors, elderly and homeless people. Please get in touch if you have suggestions. We will seek to work with grassroots, local actors only.
Financial transparency : we keep all invoices and take photos whenever we can to show how the money is used.
Please be in touch if you need more information and thanks very much for your donation!
