Cat Haven's Emergency Relief Fund

The recent lock-down, and continuing COVID restrictions have meant that we, as a community, remain safe, which we are very grateful for. This must always remain the upmost priority. For Cat Haven, we were just starting to feel somewhat ‘back to normal’, with the shelter buzzing, cats and kittens continuing to flow in, and our staff and volunteers hard at work. A sudden snap lock-down recently has returned us to the vulnerable position we have unfortunately come to know well over the last 14 months. What people might not realise is, a sudden lock-down brings our shelter to a complete halt. In our most recent lock-down, that was with 310 cats and kittens onsite to care for. A sudden lock-down means no new homes for our cats and kittens, no income coming through our retail store and boarding facility, and the cancellation of our vital fundraising events. For a second year running, our largest event, our Quiz Night has had to be cancelled. We imagine this might be the first of many this year, as we continue to live in so much unknown.

What people also might not know, is in a sudden lock-down, we are still hard at work. Our cats and kittens still need to be fed, cleaned, enriched and provided vital veterinary care. Our staff and volunteers have continued to work long hours into the night, caring for those cats and kittens that still come through our door, who we refuse to turn away. Because Every Cat Matters to us. Cats and kittens turn up regardless of a pandemic. Every day that has passed, both in our first lock-downs and in our last, has come at a deep financial cost to Cat Haven. And while we strive to rally through, some days it feels almost overwhelming with the continuing unknown of what lies ahead. To equate this to a financial impact on our organisation, the last lock-down saw a loss of 30K in retail sales, 5K in boarding cancellations, all while still paying the running costs for our shelter. On top of this, our cancelled Quiz night which normally raises 25K, are desperately needed funds we might not receive.

Since the start of the year, Cat Haven has received in 2431 cats and kittens in need, 95% of which were not desexed and with many needing more complex veterinary treatment and testing to ensure they are in good health, free of suffering and ready for the new home they deserve. Like Cat Haven, the need of our cats and kittens is constant. Cats like President Kitty who you see in our cover photo, a cat who came into our care with eyelid agenesis, a congenital defect. This condition is a relatively rare disease that causes constant pain and irritation, and if left untreated, can result in permanent vision loss. Cats like young President Kitty are receiving vital specialist medical and ongoing treatment because they came to Cat Haven. Because we continue to operate, even as we see our costs rise, and our income more vulnerable than ever. We will always ensure cats like him are able to live a life free of pain, and are able to know the love of a family. These are the cats and kittens that provide us humans with companionship on our hardest days, who become apart of our family.

As we continue to recover from the recent lock-down, and as our shelter strives to keep moving forward, we are asking for the help of our community. This year marks 60 years Cat Haven has been here for the Perth community, and we need you to be here for us, now more than ever. Please help us by donating to our Emergency Relief Fund, to ensure we can continue to provide vital resources to the thousands more cats and kittens that will need our help in the coming months including specialist medical care. President Kitty is just one of the many, many cats still waiting in our shelter or fostercare, needing specialist medical treatment before finding a furrever home, who we are furrever grateful to be able to care for because of your continued support.
