Due to a lack of other resources, it was necessary for AKR to quickly establish and self-fund a temporary koala triage facility at the Paradise Primary School gym. Within weeks up to 120 koalas were being treated at any one time. More than 300 volunteers were recruited including over 80 veterinary professionals and the site became more like a field hospital.
AKR has rescued and treated more than 500 koalas since mid-December. We continue to rescue more than 50 koalas each month that require treatment and rehabilitation. AKR still has a large number of bushfire impacted koalas in care including some that have only recently completed treatment. Many have been released but others need to remain in our purpose-built outdoor facilities until their fire-ravaged homes have recovered.
Due to bushfire victims requiring ongoing care and the ongoing influx of rescues it was necessary to establish the AKR Clinic. Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility currently based at Campbelltown is like no other service offered for koalas in South Australia. AKR is research focused providing evidence-based treatment - we are actively involved in crucial post-bushfire scientific research that will help save koalas in the future.
AKR is a not for profit organisation and registered Australian charity providing a free 24/7 wildlife rescue service to the South Australian community 365 days of the year. The cost of saving SA's koalas is funded by our charity and we need your support.
