Fundraise for Anisha Bhurtel lupus treatment

This is me Anisha Bhurtel. I have been diagnosed with lupus nephritis and Sjogren's syndrome. Currently, I am receiving chemotherapy treatment in the Lyell Mcewin Hospital. My story is as follows.

I have been living in Australia for 4 years. I was 19 when I first came to Australia. I was a healthy young girl persuading a dream of becoming a nurse. After I finished my enrolled nursing, I joined Flinders University to complete my Bachelor of nursing. During my 3rd semester of University, I became pregnant with a baby girl in April. That’s when I had to see GP and doctors for my checkups because I had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

When doing the urine tests during my pregnancy, I had lots of blood and protein in the urine. Doctor thought I might have pre-eclampsia, they run few tests, but everything was normal with the baby, and I had normal blood pressure. Finally, in the October and November, I had an appointment with a renal team. They were worried about the amount of protein and blood that I am leaking through the kidney. During an ultrasound, my right kidney was slightly bigger than left kidney. They booked a biopsy for me in January after I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in December 19.

Unfortunately, I was again hospitalized in 31st of December for placenta retain for 3 days. I had some Labour inducing hormone and luckily, I didn’t have to go through the surgery to remove the placenta bits. I was going through tremendous pain and depression. This incident delayed my biopsy for few days but when I did my biopsy on January 23rd, I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis on both kidneys and Sjogren's syndrome. I was experiencing joint pain, dry eyes and extremely dry mouth. I was on oral prednisolone 60mg, immunosuppressants, Batrum and anti-hypertensive medicine. I was battling depression and taking care of my baby at the same time.

When doctor decided to increase my oral immunosuppressants, I had massive reaction with the medication. I had continuous diarrhea and vomiting for a week. After that, I couldn’t even tolerate antihypertensive tablets. My protein, creatinine and the blood level in the urine skyrocketed and albumin decreased. Oral immunosuppressants didn’t seem to be working on me. That's when my renal team decided that I need a chemotherapy otherwise I might need to go for dialysis if my treatment is delayed.

I am an overseas student; I have a Bupa Health Cover. I need to see a renal team, rheumatologists and receive chemotherapy as an outpatient in the Lyell Mcewin Hospital. I have to pay really high amount for every outpatient appointment suck as renal appointment, rheumatologist appointment and chemotherapy infusion. My insurance cover really less for my outpatient appointment. I got a call from the hospital saying that I have really high amount of money outstanding in the hospital which my insurance didn’t cover. I have to buy the chemo drug separately over the counter before receiving the chemotherapy infusion. I have lost hopes about getting better because I ain't able to afford the hospital bill. My husband is doing night works but it barely enough to pay the rent, water bill, electricity bill and to run the households. My daughter is 5 months old and the way we are struggling is highly affecting her health status as well.

I want to get better and make a difference in the community as a nurse. I hope I will get all of your support in this journey.

Many thanks.
