Kiwi surfer Ella Williams has qualified to represent New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics in July 2020.
Ella does not receive any funding from High Performance Sport NZ towards her Olympic costs. As the surfing event is held outside of Tokyo, Ella won’t be able to stay at the Athletes Village. Therefore she needs to pay for her own travel, food and accommodation to allow her to compete at the Olympics - at a cost of more than NZ$20,000.
Ella is funding her Olympic campaign through working part time at her family's surf store in Whangamata, and through fundraising efforts in 2020.
From the age of four Ella has had a love affair with surfing. Starting off on a foam body board with the guidance of her Dad Dean, Mum Janine and older brother Braedon, it wasn’t long until she was standing up and riding the waves on a surfboard.
When she was just six years old, she declared that she was going to be a World Champion Surfer. Ella wrote this on her bedroom wall so she would see it every day, determined to make her dream come true. Some twelve years later, coming from the small south east coast town of Whangamata on New Zealand’s North Island, Ella become the Women's World Junior Surf Champion.
Ella is the winner of New Zealand National titles across all age divisions at a junior level and currently ranked 52nd on the World Surf League (WSL) Open Women's qualifying Series.
Ella's latest achievement is provisional qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, making history on two counts. First as New Zealand's first female surfer and second, surfing as a sport making its debut at the Olympics. Only 20 female surfers in the world will qualify to complete at the Olympics in 2020.
