How Australians can donate to help India’s COVID-19 crisis

India is in urgent need of COVID-19 relief as new cases of the virus hit over 350,00 per day.

As this second wave of the virus takes hold of the country, the ABC reports that a lack of oxygen tanks has left the health system at breaking point.

Australia’s 700,000 strong Indian diaspora community are watching as loved ones in India face a big fight against the virus.

Concerned Australians are helping them by starting fundraisers and donating to help India fight the virus.

What is happening in India?

India has set a record of new daily coronavirus infections, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. India has ordered its armed forces to help tackle the virus and an official at Bhopal’s Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat crematorium said of the current situation: “It is as if we are in the middle of a war.”

As the Australian government maps out its response to the tragic situation in India, organisations that work to support India are fundraising to send oxygen urgently in an attempt to provide the health system with some relief, and save lives.

Top tips for emergency fundraising

If you want to take action by starting a fundraiser to help the situation in India, we recommend fundraising for registered charities such as Medicins Sans Frontieres, who have a long history of providing medical relief in India, or the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Many will already be working on the ground to help the situation and can direct your money into existing projects. With all emergency fundraising, be clear as to why the situation is so important and why the money is needed so urgently. Imagine your readers are not following the news.

If you would rather start a personal fundraiser, or know a family in need who you would like to fundraise for, be clear about what the funds are for. Make sure to mention in your description:

  • How you will withdraw the money
  • How you will distribute the funds to the beneficiary
  • What the funds will be used for
  • What organisations you will support if excess money is raised

We also recommend setting up withdrawals straight away to ensure the money can get where it needs to go in record time. This can be as quick as 3 days if you begin the process on the same day as launching your fundraiser.

Our team of customer service agents are on hand 24/7 if you have any questions. And remember, even if you can’t donate, one of the best things you can do is to share campaigns.
