Build the Soap Box Derby Track

$4,650 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 25 people in 6 months
Our local Soap Box Derby gives kids the chance to build a soap box derby car with a mentor or parent, and then race it down the track! We’re excited about this event because it gives children ages 7-17 valuable Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills.

My wife, Marla, and I have been hosting this event partnered with the Stanwood Camano Community Resources Foundation since 2008.

In 2007, a small fleet of Red Bull Soap Box Derby cars displayed in front of a Seattle business caught my eye. I knew immediately that this type of event would be perfect for our community. I envisioned the derby bringing businesses, families and the community together.

So, I went to work researching how to start a derby, and discovered the All American Soap Box Derby, an Akron, Ohio organization that has been running the Soap Box Derby since the 1930s. Along with Marla, several volunteers, and with the Stanwood Camano Community Resources Foundation , we launched the first race during Father’s Day weekend of 2008 on 276th Street in Stanwood. There were 24 cars in the race.

Since then, we’ve purchased a 20-acre ranch on the north end of Camano Island. Our goal is to build a private Soap Box Derby track for the community. We’re proud of what we have accomplished, and are excited to open up the track every year so the children of Stanwood-Camano can come and create memories with their families.

The track is designed to be approximately 1,280 feet long and 21 feet wide, requiring countless truckloads of rock and other products.

On April 26th of this year, we broke ground on the track. With hopes to finish by race day, June 16th, we are reaching out for a little support.

No project this big (or important) can be accomplished alone. We are asking for financial help with the capital costs of the track, guardrail, return route and finish line infrastructure. We look forward to partnering with you to give this gift to the people of Stanwood and Camano Island.

We know you value the Stanwood and Camano Island community as much as we do, and we appreciate your consideration and support!

Thank you,

- Randy Heagle
