Bambigi - Aboriginal kids swimming

$12,713 of $15,000 goal

Help Aboriginal kids become deadly swimmers!

Bambigi means to swim in Wiradjuri, Griffith's traditional Aboriginal language. The Bambigi program aims to get Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids in the Griffith region into swimming lessons.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people drown at 4.4 times the rate of the general population. Teaching our kids to swim will give them a skill that could save their lives!

In the Griffith region one swimming lesson generally costs over $14. So many kids swim in dangerous channels or never learn to swim.

We started raising money in 2018, hoping to get 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids into swimming lessons. We raised enough to get 36 through six months of lessons and we aim to do even more in 2019.

The Bambigi Program was the brainchild of Piper Stewart. She is a 13 year old Aboriginal girl living in Griffith, NSW. Piper and her brother love to swim and are members of the Griffith Swim Club. They travel to regional swim competitions regularly and noticed there are only a few Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids from Griffith who compete.

Piper heard her mum talk about how much swim lessons and competitions cost and realised many Aboriginal families could not afford this. So she decided she wanted to help.

In addition to this Go Fund Me page Piper has developed partnerships with local pools, spent weekends selling raffles tickets, chocolates and come up with a bucket load of other fundraising ideas. Check out our website www.bambigi.com or follow us on Facebook for updates.

So far we have helped over 80 kids get swimming lessons. We have also partnering with other Aboriginal organisations to expand the program. This term we are helping Tirkandi Inaburra boys get water safety classes and the Wiradjuri Aboriginal Pre-school kids into swimming lessons. We are super excited to be partnering with these Aboriginal organisations.

We have got 36 kids through lessons this year, now we will be able to do even more in 2019. The money we have raised has helped these kids learn to swim, a skill that could save their life. We will keep posting updates here or you can follow us on Facebook @bambigi or check out www.bambigi.com. Thanks again for your support!

We won an award!
Piper started Bambigi to get more of Griffith’s Aboriginal kids into swimming lessons and competitions. She has worked hard fundraising and it has been worth it to see the Bambigi kids having fun in the pool and their swimming improve.
A new group of Bambigi kids are ready to start lessons next week. So we are on track to getting more then 20 of Griffith's Aboriginal kids into swimming lessons this year.
Because of all of this great work Piper has done with Bambigi she was recognised at Griffiths NAIDOC awards night. It was fantastic for her work to be recognised amongst so many strong Indigenous woman doing great things for the Griffith community.
