Richard Overton - 24/7 homecare

$450,144 of $500,000 goal

Raised by 8,740 people in 23 months
Volma Overton Jr.
on behalf of Richard Overton
 AUSTIN, TX
Richard Overton is 112 years old and is the oldest living United States veteran. He is a veteran of World War II and currently lives in his home in Austin, Texas.

Richard has out lived all of his closest relatives and is in need of 24/7 home care. We are asking for donations to keep him living in his home instead of a nursing home.

In 2013, Richard met President Obama at the White House for breakfast before accompanying the president to the to Arlington National Cemetery for a Veterans Day ceremony, where he was honored.

In 2015, Austin filmakers Rocky Conly and Matt Cooper made a short film about Richard Overton.

In 2015, Richard Overton was featured in Cigar Aficionado magazine as America's Oldest Cigar Smoker. He says the secret to long life is "Cigars and God". He is also known to enjoy his whiskey still.

On behalf of the Overton family, we greatly appreciate any donations to help Richard stay in his home and receive in-home care.

Let me first of all start out with this update by thanking all of the veterans for their service to our nation on this Veterans Day. And many thanks to and for all of the soldiers who are serving our nation around the world at this time. Richard Overton is thankful for his service to his country as the nation's oldest living WWII veteran. I have been blessed to be around him on a regular basis to have heard many of his stories about his service in major world events back in the 1940's. Richard is recently out of the hospital recovering from a bout with pneumonia. He is now pneumonia free but not able to be involved in events at this time so he is missing his involvement in the Veterans Parade in Austin, Texas. Given time to recover from this we are hoping that he will be able to speak and do other activities soon. I want to share with you all about the investigation into his personal account being hacked. My first thoughts was that the investigation would not take long but little did I know much about how this came about. The investigators are still doing their work on this case and what I do know now is that Richard just happened to be one of thousands that this has happened to and that this is much bigger than I could have imagined. Many thanks to all of you for all that you have done in making a difference in Richard's life. He is still here with us because of you. His 24/7 care is absolutely necessary for his survival and with your help we are approaching our 24th month of 24/7 home care. So please keep doing all that you have been doing, caring, loving, sharing and giving. Much, much love to you all.

This update is all about all of you wonderful, caring, loving and thoughtful individuals from around the globe who have made it possible for Richard Overton to be here today. Please each and everyone of you have made a living difference in the life of Richard Overton and I hope that you all can receive the blessings in your lives as you have blessed him with your donations. As I have mentioned in many updates before "Richard would not be here today without" you and your gifts to his well being. I did contact gofundme earlier as there were 4 unauthorized gofundme pages set up for his support after his identity was stolen and used to drain his account. One of pages managed to collect about $8 hundred and then disappeared and Richard has not received anything from that unauthorized page. This page was set up in December 2016 for him and has been the only officially authorized gofundme page for him. So if you see some of the other pages, just look at the set up date and if it is relatively new or current it is not authorized so please share this with others. We still haven't received any info on the criminal involved in Richard's theft but I will update as soon as I get the word. BLESSINGS, PEACE and LOVE to you all.

I want everyone know that at this time the authorities have not shared with us any information as to where they are on Richard's case. We were all hoping for the criminal to be caught quickly and that has not happened. What I do hear is that we are moving in the right direction. And as I had mentioned in the previous update "as soon as we find out" that info will be shared with all of you. Richard is doing just fine and is very happy knowing that every dollar that he had in his account is back to where it was before funds were taken. He has been given a new account and things have been set up that hopefully will prevent something like this from happening again. All of you wonderful, caring, sharing, loving and prayerful supporters have made such a difference in Richard's life. I wish that each one of you could meet him and get to talk to him for a few minutes to sense his appreciation for your love for him and his love for all in his long lived life. I am thinking way ahead but if you could make it to his 113th Birthday Party on Richard Overton Avenue in 10 months that could possibly happen. Many thanks to all with peace, blessings and love.

After having his personal account with Bank of America drawn down to nothing by someone who stole his identity I want to share with everyone the good news about Richard's personal account. Bank of America restored his account today back to the amount that would have been there before the criminal messed with his account. At this time there are several agencies including Bank Of America working on this case to bring it to an end. It is my belief that the criminal does not have much longer before we know who that happens to be. Many thanks for the out pouring by so many for Richard in this crime done against him. You have blessed him so graciously with your love, your concern, your support and your donations that you have given to him. He is thankful to have his funds restored and asked the question "have they caught the one who did this"? My reply to him is "not yet but I don't think that it will be much longer. Each and everyone of you have made such a big difference in the life of Richard and we are so thankful. As soon as we have more info about this crime it will be shared with you. Peace, blessings and love to you.

To the people leaving negative comments and questioning the family's motives: No, Mr. Overton has not already passed away, he is still alive and kicking and being awesome. I know because he's my cousin. Additionally, homecare is exponentially more expensive than you might think. And if the family raises way more money than they intended, good! He deserves it.

For the people saying home health care doesnt cost $100,000 you are correct. It costs way more! 24 hour care is from $15-20/hr so that would be over $2800/wk. That doesnt add in food, medicine, and equipment. Home care can cost a low average of $174,000/ year. I know personally because I own a home care agency. Unless you go pick a random person off of the street and pay them a little bit of nothing health care is expensive and unfortunately that amount of care will never be covered by any insurance company. Thats why our elders end up in nursing homes. Educate yourselves before speaking.

Our Cub Scout Pack had a meeting with Mr. Overton on the front lawn a few years ago. We would like to know if there are any home maintenance items that need attention around the house, anything from lawn mowing to clearing the roof of leaves, trimming trees, etc. (I am a roofing contractor & have all the tools for handling any of these items & more). Please contact me via: Roofing.Quote-at-yahoo.com if there is anything we can assist with. Sincerely, Pack 101 Dripping Springs

For all of you leaving negative and comments questioning the amount of money being raised, really? Shame on you! As Christina Hoppes laid out for you the healthcare costs are real and I do not believe that she even factored in any medications. If you have paid for any of these type of services you would know how expensive it is . If you would have bothered to do just a bit of research instead of being automatically critical you would also have known how expensive these services are. With the much talked about proposed decimation of social security, medicaid/medicare, and ACA these expenses are only going to increase. What has happened to empathy and caring in this city/country/world? (Granted, the negative comments were not as many as the positive but it just irks me to no end why people begrudge an elder who has sacrificed so much this campaign.)

To people who are being negative. I hope you are never in need of care like this gentleman who gave so much & expected so little in return. & the people saying that it doesn't cost $15,000 a month... The average CNA makes $15hr... 24hrs in a day, 365 days a year. Thats just pay that doesn't include food, his bills, medications & everyday needs. So before you want to speak on something know what your talking about. I'm to far to offer my time but I truly hope people step up give a lil back to someone who gave so much for them... Thank You for your service Sir & may God bless you always.

I have worked in home health for years and without proper insurance or supplement coverage full time round the clock specialized care can easily cost 15,000+ a month. Just for a full time home health aid at $20 an hour, which is what the average cost is out of pocket in Texas, is about 13,000 a month and that doesn't include RN,LVN,PT, or OT needs.

Is Mr. Overton's home healthcare an item that a blood donation program could be used to raise nontaxable funds that way? I'll call the blood center to ask, if you want, bc I've previously helped my sister in 2000 to AML & a racer in 2010 whose car blew up in what's called "micro midgets" in both cases over $50K was raised about every 2 weeks!
