UPDATE: Walter is overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people who have wanted to support him. He has decided that any additional donations beyond the current total ($66,292) will go to the Birmingham Ed Foundation (Ed).  This is an organization that is close to Walter’s heart as he benefited from their services.  Ed is dedicated to increasing the number of students in Birmingham City Schools that are on the path to college, career, and life readiness.  To learn more, visit edbirmingham.org .

Yesterday, I shared a story on my Facebook page about a Bellhops mover, Walter, who helped me with my move. I soon met a man who would entirely change my perspective of moving day. My move was Walter’s first job as a bellhop, and the night before, his 2003 Nissan Altima wasn’t working. He lives 20 miles from my house.

All of Walter’s backup rides fell through, so he used Google Maps to calculate the time it would take to walk from his house to mine: 7 hours. That didn’t stop him. According to Walter, he ate something around midnight and headed out on foot in time to make it to my house before my 8am move began.

Walter walked all the way from his house in Homewood to Pelham in the early morning hours of July 14, where a Pelham Police Officer, after hearing his story, picked him up, took him to breakfast, and gave him a ride the rest of the way.

Walter showed up for my move early and still had the energy to work hard and with a good attitude throughout the rest of the day.

Walter’s story touched not only my heart, the hearts of his employers and coworkers at Bellhops, but also the hearts of hundreds of people who’ve read his story on Facebook.

In the past 24 hours, I’ve received hundreds of messages from folks trying to find a way to help Walter with his car trouble so I put this page together to help.

Note: Evan Carter with ACG Wealth  has graciously agreed to walk alongside Walter pro bono to help him plan, save and manage these funds.
