Jodie-Anne Gardam's Spinal Surgery

Jodie was a teacher for 16 years, when in early 2014 she was struck hard on the side of the face intentionally by a student with a soccer ball. The incident triggered syringomyelia, cysts in the spinal cord, to activate and has caused issues at the base of her brain with CSF flow and possible instability where her skull meets her spine.

This has caused so many issues for her, including chronic pain, motor and sensory issues, chronic vertigo and nausea. This will continue to progressively get worse unless she gets this surgery, and other surgeries, for this condition. The surgery is designed to alleviate the pressure on the base of her brain, and to investigate the cervicocranial junction for instability (and fix it if necessary- this may take a couple of surgeries).

This is her only chance to halt progression of her symptoms for now and hopefully get some quality of life back. We have a brilliant team of  solicitor and barrister who have exhausted all options. Our only choice now is to appeal to the Supreme Court or pay for it ourselves, which is the cheaper option.  And unfortunately, timing is essential before the damage is too far gone.

Hi everyone!

Just a quick update on Jodie.
She isn’t going very well at the moment. Her pain and anxiety have been a bit out of control, so her doctors have been playing around with her medications (again!) to hopefully help. The crazy thing is that when her pain increases, she gets anxious, and when she is anxious her pain increases. It’s a bad cycle she just can’t get off, and we are all working so hard to help her.
Unfortunately, the process of changing medications is making her sick, but we are all keeping positive that it is a good move. And in June, Jodie goes into hospital for a week for a ketamine infusion again to help bring her pain and pain medication levels back down to lower levels (temporarily, but something is better than nothing ).
We are still hoping that soon we can get her in for the first of her surgeries, but we still have some more fundraising to go. In the meantime we are working with our doctors to keep Jodie as comfortable as possible.
I’d just like to thank everyone who has donated and shared our GoFundMe page, as well as reached out to Jodie and I and helped us in other ways. We are so very appreciative.
If you could all continue to share our page as often as you can we would be so very grateful.

Thank you!
